After a long winter, DJ Shaw and the Precision JLM Racing team were back to defend their Pro All Stars Series North championship this past weekend with the season opening “Icebreaker” at Thompson Speedway in Thompson, Connecticut. This season, Shaw is sporting a new look on his familiar #60, but is certainly hoping to continue the great streak he’s been on as one of the Northeast’s best drivers. He was able to continue that this past Sunday with a third place effort at Thompson.
“This race was a lot of fun, we lead some laps and got a solid finish out of it,” Shaw said after the race, “The two guys behind us were a bit better than us, and I had to play defense for most of this race but it was a really good battle with Ramstrom, we pushed each other to the limit but not over it and I’m glad to come out of the first race with a top three.”
DJ Shaw started on the outside pole for his heat race and quickly was able to drive away from the 51 of Eddie Fatscher and take the lead. Shaw led all the laps to come away with his first heat win of the season, giving the pole position for the 75 lap feature event.
On the start of the feature event, Shaw was pinned on the inside line as the 71 of Eddie MacDonald drove around him on the outside. Shaw followed until the race’s first caution on lap ten. On the ensuing restart, Shaw was able to grab the lead right back away from MacDonald using the outside lane as Shaw lead lap 11. Shaw lead until the next yellow flag flew on lap 19 for a spin and once again was pinned to the bottom as MacDonald got around for the lead on the next restart and Fatscher was able to power his way around for the second spot as well, as Shaw fell back to third. From there, the race ran green and Shaw had a mirror full of Derek Ramstrom and Derek Griffith behind him. The three drivers swapped some paint, and weaved their way through lapped traffic before Shaw started to gain ground on the leaders. It was too late however, as Shaw was able to hold the balance and keep the third spot to the checkered flag, giving him a great start to the 2017 season.
The next race for the Precision JLM Racing team will be at the famed Oxford Plains Speedway on April 22nd
. Shaw finished runner up to Ben Rowe in this race a year ago in a thrilling finish at the line, seeing Rowe go wide to defend his lead and Shaw almost able to capitalize with a strong run to the inside to finish second at the line. The grandstands will open at 9:30AM with heat racing and the feature events to follow.
